One of the most recognizable characters on Statia is Josser Daniel. Born in Santo Domingo in 1923 but left as a 3 1/2 year old to come to Statia. Schooled on the island, Josser left school at 14 but assisted with his mother on the plantation in his spare time.
His first work experience was to work on the "experimental garden" in Concordia. At the same time he went to night school where he learned masonry and carpentry skills. Prior to concrete housing in the 1940's all the houses were constructed out of wood.
Most of his work was with the Statia government in the 1950's - at that time the islanders were poor and most of the work was with Public Works. Married in 1949, he was tye father to 10 children. In order to support his family, he worked in Sint Maarten.
In 1986 Mr. Daniel established his taxi business and started his "Historical Tour Guide" of the island in 1990. Take a tour with Mr. Daniel where he will share his experiences of the island with you.
